Alternative Measures & Extrajudicial Sanctions
Alternative Measures for Adults and Extrajudicial Sanctions for Youth provides clients with an alternative to the traditional court process through community and restorative justice initiatives. Caseworkers support adult and youth offenders and victims in the community using various restorative justice practices, including Victim-Offender Mediation, Talking and Healing Circles, Community Justice Forums, Family Group Conferencing and Accountability Hearings.
For an offence to be eligible for the program, adults are required to take responsibility for their actions. A face-to-face meeting between offender and victim is arranged and a mediated discussion takes place with the intent to repair harm and deter adult offenders from further criminal activity. Upon successful completion, the charge is withdrawn by the courts.
